Our Theology Must Dictate Our Methodology« Back to Blog

Not too many years ago evangelicals, particularly Southern Baptists, fought a battle for the truth of the Bible. The “battle for inerrancy” was a major war that was fought and won by conservatives in order that the doctrine of inerrancy would be preserved. Unfortunately, in our battle for inerrancy we have lost the battle for the sufficiency. While we affirm and scream about the inerrancy of Scripture, we deny the sufficiency of Scripture in our life and practice.
When we examine the practices of most evangelical churches, it is easy to see what drives their methodology is pragmatism and not the Bible. Churches do things because they “work” or “get results”, but if we believe that the Bible is sufficient we must humbly submit all that we do to the Scriptures regardless if they “work” or get the results.
That is why one of the distinctives of Anchored in Truth is to be Bible saturated or thoroughly Biblical. Our distinctive reads, “It is our desire to be thoroughly biblical in the totality of our lives. Our purpose, our methods, and our goals must be from sound, biblical teaching. We reject the modern concept that biblical goals can be achieved by man-centered, man-empowered methods. Our theology must dictate our methodology.” As evangelicals, we must reclaim the doctrine of the sufficiency of Scripture if we want our methods to be God-honoring. God receives the most glory when we trust in Word that He has given us for not only our theology, but for our methodology as well.
